The average length of a menstrual cycle is 28 days. Sometimes it may be shorter or longer. If the interval between a woman's periods is less than 21 days or more than 35 days, this is called menstrual irregularity. Common causes of menstrual irregularity are hormonal imbalances such as pregnancy, infections, intrauterine and ovulation problems, conditions such as myoma and polycystic ovary syndrome, trauma, stress and medication use. Menstrual bleeding may be much heavier or lighter than normal. Menstrual irregularity is caused by stress, medications or various health problems.
