AMH is the abbreviation of the hormone called Anti-Müllerian Hormone. AMH is a hormone whose importance has only been understood in recent years. Until recently, it was thought that the ovaries, which determine reproductive function in women, were controlled by a hormone called FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone), and ovarian function was monitored with FSH.
FSH is a hormone released from the pituitary gland. AMH, on the other hand, is a hormone secreted directly by the ovaries. For this reason, the AMH Test reflects ovarian function better. Because of this, the AMH Test has begun to be used frequently to assess ovarian reserve (the number of remaining eggs) in women, to monitor the approach to menopause, and to make decisions about IVF. AMH reflects the number of eggs remaining in the ovaries; on its own it does not show egg quality, the chance of conceiving naturally, or infertility. A low AMH does not mean you cannot conceive, and a normal/high AMH does not mean you will conceive easily. Recently, the AMH test has started to replace FSH.
AMH (ANTI-MÜLLERIAN HORMONE)
What Is the State of Your Ovarian Function? It is a test that can help answer this question. AMH cannot predict the timing of menopause with certainty; diagnosis is based on menstrual history and FSH.
AMH is a hormone secreted by the ovaries in women and by the testes in men.
In women, AMH slows follicle selection. In men, it is secreted by Sertoli cells and causes regression of the Müllerian ducts.
For this reason, they do not adequately reflect ovarian activity. AMH is the ovary's own hormone.
For this reason, it reflects ovarian activity better.
AMH is used in women for the following purposes:
In men, it is used to investigate testicular function and infertility. In children, it is used for purposes such as investigating puberty, enabling sex differentiation, and investigating ambiguous genitalia. AMH is measured from blood. Fasting is not required. AMH can be measured on any day of the cycle; birth control pills, pregnancy and hormone treatments lower AMH, while AMH may be high in PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).
