Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a common type of virus. It is a DNA virus and causes warts, papillomas and cervical cancer. Most sexually active people encounter this virus at some point in their lives.

HPV settles on the penis and genital area in men, and on the external genital organs, vagina and cervix in women. There are more than 120 types of HPV; although it is seen especially in the genital area, some types can be seen in the anal region and inside the mouth.

Depending on where it appears, it can cause cancer. It can lead to cervical cancer in women, anal cancer around the anus in men and women, and penile and urethral cancer and even bladder cancer in men. Likewise, through oral sex, it can form lesions in the mouth, on the tongue and on the palate and lay the ground for cancer.

Not every HPV type causes cancer, and the recurrence of the disease and the formation of active lesions in the body depend on the person's immune system. In some people, despite encountering the virus, it can be cleared by the body without any symptoms, or only the ability to transmit it remains without the disease, which we call being a carrier.
