What Is the Gut Microbiota Test?

Interest in the gut microbiota has increased steadily over the last decade.

Scientific studies conducted around the world show that we live in symbiosis with the microorganisms that make up our microbiome.

This permanent and reciprocal biological relationship between the microbiota and our organism is beneficial for both sides and plays an important role in maintaining our digestive, metabolic and neurological functions.

Under certain conditions, an imbalance in the composition of the microbiota may be observed, that is, the proportion of bacteria that are normally present may increase or decrease. This condition is called dysbiosis. This disruption of balance in the gut microbiota is thought to be responsible for conditions such as depression, obesity and chronic inflammatory diseases.

For this reason, it is important to keep the gut microbiota in balance in order to:

-Ensure that its functions are carried out properly;

-Limit its involvement in metabolic, digestive or other pathologies.

To do this, it is necessary to know the composition of the microbiota; otherwise, it is not possible to detect possible imbalances or the presence of pathogens.

In this context, we can analyze your gut microbiota by performing gut microbiota mapping.

What Can We Expect from the Gut Microbiota Test Results?

The gut microbiota mapping test provides:

-Identification and distribution of the bacteria that make up your microbiota;

-If necessary, detection of the presence of pathogenic bacteria* in your microbiota;

-Observation of dysbiosis.

Once dysbiosis has been identified and detected, it is possible to balance the microbiota and improve your condition by changing your diet or taking probiotics.

*Not all human pathogenic bacteria can be detected with this test.

Who Is the Gut Microbiota Test Suitable For?

This test is suitable for:

-Those who are simply curious;

-Those suffering from pathologies (diabetes, obesity, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, etc.);

-Those following a specific and selective diet that may alter the microbiota;

-Those undergoing medical treatment (antibiotics, chemotherapy, etc.).

How Is the Gut Microbiota Mapping Test Performed?

Gut microbiota analysis is performed on a stool sample, because studies have shown that the composition of the microorganisms in our stool is comparable to that in our colon.

State-of-the-Art Technology at Your Fingertips

The test is based on sequencing a common gene (16S) from the stool sample in order to identify all the bacteria present in the gut at the same time. The sequencing results are analyzed by microbiota experts to determine the status of your microbiota.

*Turnaround time: 4-6 weeks Test type: Stool sample Method: NGS
